I'm not an incense fan, but the color of this display certainly caught my eye...
During our explorations strolled through a little square and I found these two ladies engrossed in a Spanish conversation I couldn't comprehend... How cute are they?!?
They undoubtedly made me think someday that will be me and my pal... A little older and slightly more wrinkled... Ah well, get out there and enjoy that SUN!

I love her photography. Kitchy-cool in a quirky Anthropologie-sort-a-way. Where else does Playboy live in Harmony with grannies dusty doilies?!? This is from her SOLD series of photos from estate sales and the like.

I bought this photo at the MCAD art sale last year and framed it in a simple, laquered white frame. It currently resides at my studio in my currently artistic (translation: messy) office. From her HOME series. My grandma had that EXACT same applique table cloth with the buttery yellow pear... I'm slightly nostalgic... and a sucker for anything pink...

In pursuit of a fresh spring start, I also opted for a new basket of bath towels in every shape and size. The splurge... 800 thread count and my favorite thread color for monogramming. Talk about an instant bath remodel!

A client recently returned from Scotland and was enamoured with this woolen mill who makes all sorts of wool fabulousness. We are currently having 12 metres of a beautiful wool tweed made specifically for us. Once it reaches our hands stateside it will be used for upholstery on a perfectly tailored arm chair and ottoman. Talk about a customized chair!

Chalk It Up...

Martha Stewart's Custom Chalkboard Colors How-To:
1. Start with flat-finish latex paint in any shade. For small areas, such as a door panel, mix 1 cup at a time.
2. Pour 1 cup of paint into a container. Add 2 tablespoons of unsanded tile grout. Mix with a paint stirrer, carefully breaking up clumps.
3. Apply paint with a roller or a sponge paintbrush to a primed or painted surface. Work in small sections, going over the same spot several times to ensure full, even coverage. Let dry.
4. Smooth area with 150-grit sandpaper, and wipe off dust.
5. To condition: Rub the side of a piece of chalk over entire surface. Wipe away residue with a barely damp sponge.

Not your grandma's wallpaper...

Wallcovering has had a turbulent existence, coming in and out of vogue. Without doubt it's enjoying a renaissance of it's own. My suggestion is to use it sparingly. Create a little jewel box by adorning walls of a power room, dressing room or study. Here are a few of my favorite bold patterns from Osborne and Little and Designers Guild.

Shelf Life...

A question I hear often: "How do I arrange my shelves?"

Here's the inside scoop without any consultation fees. Start by taking inventory of your items. Pull every single accessory item out of the room and, "stage," them so you can easily shop your own items.

You can't go wrong with 80% of your display as hardcover books.

Not a literary genius? Scour second hand stores or your local Good Will. No ones needs to know you didn't read War and Peace. Consider stacking them vertically, horizontally or separate them by color.
One of my favorite designer tricks... Visit the neighborhood stationary store, paper store or Paper Source online and invest in a bundle of couture paper or wrapping paper (sans the sheen). Do as you did in the 3rd grade and create your own book covers. An easy, simple and inexpensive way to add color and interest to your display.

If a punch of color isn't your cup of tea create a look equally as interesting with items from the same color palette.
Mix in framed art or photographs. Don't be afraid to layer them atop one another. Perfection is boring. Think designed without looking decorator-ey (it's a word, I swear).
Look no little, ditsy accessories! Think of the shelf as a composition, not a retail display. I love the series of red vases standing at attention side by side.

Do as you do in fashion... Layer, layer, layer. Stack books behind frames. Perch frames on top of the books. Not perfect, but not messy either.

I LOVE a piece of art hung on the face frame OR hang a piece to completely cover one cubbie. Feel free to hide all your skeletons and junk behind this new, "designer door."
Make sure you incorporate new items with old, an antique vase with a lacquered box. Be critical. Stand back, look at the composition as a whole, and edit as necessary. Then take a picture and email me-I'd love to see what you're up to!

Fact: Designers love lucite. Dare I say one clear piece = room makeover?

See through and see to it that you add one piece to your home's portfolio of fabulous objects. Maybe a small piece like this stool which doubles as a magazine rack...

Or a twist to a clean-lined, transitional sofa...

Perhaps it's an end table flanking the side of your favorite lounge chair or a small scale night stand...

Fable: Lucite is reserved for occasional chairs and tables.

Imagine how incredible this queen size headboard would be layered on a wall adorned with a great wall covering or upholstered walls...

Fact: Every dwelling needs just one piece incorporating lucite.

I happen to have the Kartell ghost chair, perched in a corner of my bedroom. The ghost adds a place to perch without consuming space visually.

If my office was this tidy an acrylic desk would top my list of must haves.

A boudoir chair. A romantic addition to your makeup counter. Big design impact without any bulk. Take a risk with a fun pattern or printed fabric.

At the foot of your bed. Functional, yet glamorous.

Fable: Acrylic is hard to incorporate with antiques and traditional furnishings. It's reserved for contemporary design.

Fact: Acrylic is to the home as blue jeans are to the wardrobe... Completely interchangeable and always fashionable.

Shed a little light (and just the right amount of sparkle) on any situation.

Furniture Rehab: The Bookcase.

Face it, who doesn't love a D.I.Y. (do it yourself) project now and again? Especially when the project allows us to re purpose, "junk," we already have. Save a little cash, spare the landfill and breathe life into a tired piece of furniture. This month we tackle one of my personal favorites... the bookcase.

Fess up. Do you own something similar to this?

Fear not, a tired, ugly bookcase can get a serious face lift for less than $50 bucks and a tiny bit of elbow grease. Begin by investing in quality paint, a good brush and take a chance on some COLOR!

Begin by painting the frame and shelves of the bookcase a neutral color. Try Benjamin Moore's Cloud White or Black Jack. Bring the bookcase to life by adding a punch of color to the inside back. Give Benjamin Moore's Yellow Highlighter or Grape Green a shot.

Family heirlooms are important, but don't worry if your Aunt Hilda's antique secretary isn't your cup of tea.

A little lacquer and new hardware will bring this piece to life (maybe just warn Aunt Hilda first...). Take a chance on Benjamin Moore's Florida Keys Blue complimented by Purple Hyacinth.

Discover the suzani....

The suzani, from the Persian word suzan meaning needle, is a truly amazing textile. This handwoven heirloom is an interesting ethnic rival to the Midwest quilt. Bold, vibrant colors are created by hand dying yarns from the fruits of the land. Think red from pomegranate skins, warm browns from walnuts and deep blue from indigo. These intense colored strands have been hand stitched into intricate patterns dating as far back as the 18th century from behind the former Iron Wall. A significant amount of these pieces come from Central Asia including the country of Uzbekistan.

A suzani as a throw blanket adds color and interest.

An antique suzani, typically done on a neutral ground of silk or cotton, withstands the test of time.

Hands down my favorite accessory is and always will be flowers. Filling your home with fresh flowers need not be complicated nor expensive. Minneapolis boasts one of the finest farmer's markets in the Midwest making fresh cut stems accessible and affordable.

Three rules to arrange by:

1. Keep. It. Simple. One flower, one color, immense impact.

2. Flower Power Squared. Load your arms (green grocery bag or basket) with as many bundles as you think it will take to fill your vessel... then double the amount. When in doubt er on the side of too much. If ever there is a time for excess it's now.

3. Let Them Billow. Trim stems close and clean (cutting at a diagonal) and fill your container to maximum capacity.

Use flowers, such as hydrangeas, with large heads to make a statement.

Cluster small containers on a mantle or table to create one large ensemble.

For me printed fabrics are like chocolate. I don't need to consume the entire Dove bar, I just need a little square to feel content. Every space needs at least a taste of pattern for interest. Think pillows, an accent chair or perhaps even window treatments. Every now and again you run across a real, "sweet tooth," space which requires layers of pattern creating the illusion the room has evolved by collecting over time. There's not a better medium for a bold pattern than natural linen and cotton fibers, and no one knows better than Quadrille, China Seas, Alan Campbell and Home Couture. When it comes to picking the exact hue of pale green for your walls or selecting a perfectly appointed sofa I'm the woman to call. When it comes to creating branding, designing logos and selecting fonts I most certainly know my limitations. Creative industry requires creative marketing collateral from a graphic design, industry expert. Amy Barthel is among the most talented of graphic designers with a strong background in art and color. She was able to take my basic concept, "classic-simplicity," and produce bold, yet sophisticated,
graphics for my business.

Another company required fun and flirty material geared toward a
fashionable, female market.

Haute Design for the Hot Summer Months...

Spring has most certainly sprung! I have always preached neutral upholstery creates a perfect backdrop for seasonal design. Heavily woven, "meaty," fibers have their place in squishy down filled pillows and nubby cable knit throws for the chilly winter months, but not when the sun-is-a-shining. I believe in seasonal design for myself and my clients. A retail store changes merchandise for the changing seasons and doing the same for your home doesn't have to be exorbitantly expensive or complicated. Simply swap out pillow covers (using the same down inserts) and voila instant summer!

Every space needs a little helping of mid century modern. What better than one of my personal faves designed in 1960 by Verner Panton? My casa is equipped with a crisp white set of 4, tucked neatly under a chiseled, chipped and hefty walnut table.

Don't be afraid. Maybe just a little dash of mod and whatever else you can round up. Designed without being, "designed." Perfect.Mini "S" oh Yes! Try as the kiddies may the first single-form injection-moulded plastic chairs are virtually indestructible. Trust me, I can vouch for them. Candy colors without any cavities.Juxtaposition. A rule to design by. An otherwise traditional, turned legged, carrera marble table paired with surprising seating. Fresh. Fun. Thought provoking.

Panton in the parish. I would rise and shine at the crack of dawn (no snooze, I promise) each and every Sunday if I could attend St. Bartholomew's in Eastern Bohemia. Rough cut crystal chandeliers, layered antique rugs and Eames moulded fiberglass chair at the alter. Amen.

Long since banned to ski lodges and and musty basements, taxidermy in design has been a trend for the last few years. We've seen these, "works," introduced in unlikely places.

Layered atop heavy-patterned walls with a montage of mis-matched toss pillows...
Or perhaps pattern meet deer, deer meet pattern...

Designing green is no longer just a buzz word or a trend. Being green is hip, chic and above all the environmentally responsible thing to do. Certainly a complete overhaul of your home, from water heater to sustainable flooring, would leave the LEED folks smiling. But, this sort of major transformation may not be in the cards, or should I say budget? A green update to your home is attainable with a nominal monetary investment in a quality paint and good brush. Environmentally friendly paint technology offers good coverage and health benefits to Mother Earth. Purchasing Eco friendly paint does more than just promise low off gasing or VOC limits. Paint companies are really thinking, "outside the paint can." Before you roll out the drop clothes consider purchasing paint from companies committed to:

Reducing waste and conserving natural resources in manufacturing facilities.
Using sophisticated software to determine distribution routes to minimize fuel.

Increasing the use of bio diesel fuel.

Implementing recycling programs at offices, stores and distribution centers.

Installing energy efficient systems at all new plant facilities.

Pioneering the use of renewable or sustainable raw materials in some formulations.

Using blown-in-line colorant bottles that use less resin, save freight costs and reduce the volume of hazardous waste.

Filling paints in sustainable plastic containers made from 100% recycled post-consumer resin with labels containing recovered fiber and post-consumer waste, printed with soy ink.

Consider Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore or Farrow and Ball.

Dogs in design...

Release the hounds! The world of design has seemingly gone to the dogs. Cute, furry, little faces make even the toughest soul's heart melt & add interest to photos. Take for example, the room above. The Robbin's egg blue walls and crisp, white trim give great contrast to the dark floor and geometric rug. But would this room really be photo shoot quality without a posing bulldog?

An artistic shot, over exposed with light, gives way to a contemporary, cherry red table and antique wrought iron chairs. I'm always a sucker for a venetian mirror, traditional or contemporary every home needs one. Undoubtedly, a fun medley of objects but not necessarily thought provoking without a sassy pooch centered in the frame.

I love an all white room. Impractical for most households, but stunning none the less. A clean, white, monochromatic room allows seamless blending of all furniture styles. For example, the traditional shape of the slip covered sofa mends effortlessly with the contemporary storage console and duo of organic stools. The sharp contrast of the midnight-black K-9 distracts your eye from noticing the barren wall, screaming for a piece of art bursting with color.

A truly fabulous retro modern room. This room could be circa 1974 or 2009 and yet the design is timeless. Clean lined night stands and wardrobe compliment the pattern in the frame of the occasional chair. Chocolate brown and white geometric panels hung from ceiling mounted rods grant grandness and the illusion of a four-poster bed. Clean, crisp white linens are always a sure fire winner, but are certainly not the component that makes this space sing. Without the funky, blaze orange, retro lamps and the camel-colored-four-legged friend this room would be lifeless.

A final example. A white washed backdrop from floor to ceiling gets dimension from the interesting shape of the dining table and chairs. But, French dining chairs and oversized ceiling lights are NOT what leaves me yearning to sit in this space. Rather it is the thought of tucking cold toes under the soft coat of this napping dog. Design gone to the dogs? I rest my case.

A chair for any occasion...

More than just a spare spot to perch, the occasional chair is the best seat in the house. The occasional chair is slightly larger, and sometimes a bit lower, than the dining chair. The long, bare legs provide softness in scale, and an interesting reprieve from a sea of upholstery.

An occasional chair can easily, "sneek," into a tight, bare corner to create a cozy nook. A masterfully, layered design is achieved by placing this light scale chair in front of a fireplace or other focal point.The key to proper installation of the occasional chair is in the grouping. Ensure the chair relates to the space by pairing it with a table/foot stool of similar scale.

Adding an occasional chair infuses a punch of personality into an otherwise flat room. A fussy, antique chair can take on another persona by simply lacquering the frame and replacing sick-green velvet with sassy patent leather...

... or painting an outdated fruit wood frame and adding a bold colored solid fabric...
... or a wild, funky, large scale pattern...
... or add life to an barren corner by creating an intimate grouping, perfect for sipping a glass of wine.

Creating Texture (& a notable sale!)...

So many facets of interior design to consider when pulling together the perfect space. Each piece of the, "design puzzle," just as important as the next in exceptional design. Among the puzzle pieces to consider is the element of texture. Texture is an important visual and tactile que which defines noteworthy design. Architecturally texture can be felt through dry, rough timbers crossing the ceiling or the buttery smooth feeling of a honed limestone fireplace surround. The texture can be sensed through the low lustre depth of French waxed floors or a surprising architectural antique like time aged, robin's egg blue shutters. If a major remodel is not in the cards fear not. Roll out a sisal rug or add a pair of tailored panels or a roman shade to an open window. Simply stated texture can be added by draping an antique tapestry over a bare wall, by tossing some cotton velvet or embroidered crewel pillows on a sofa or reupholstering a tired pair of chairs in a slubby linen. Whether it's a perfectly put together outfit for a first date or interview or a welcoming invitation into your home, the first impression needs to be impressive. The Mystery of Fortuny...

Nearly a century ago Mariano Fortuny developed a unique, artistic process for printing textiles. Fortuny's fabric adorns the finest churches, museums & palaces including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, the Carnavalet Museum in Paris and Blair House in Washington D.C. Fortuny used his own formulations of dyes and pigments based on ancient, time honored techniques. The fabrics created in 1907 were so mystifying, rumors began to swirl that sorcery and magic must have been used to create pieces with such authentic antiquity. Fortuny's intricate process is still held secret withing the island factory walls. Countess Gozzi of Italy was a generous host welcoming guests to Guidecca's gardens but no one was or ever has been allowed to witness the production of these exquisite Italian textiles.

Fortuny is a truly incredible fabric deep and rich with pigment and elegantly printed with simmering, yet subtle, intricate patterns. While owning your own Fortuny piece comes with a significant price tag, if cared for properly it will age and preserve beautifully for generations.

Design Philosophy...

Ever since I was a child I remember arranging and rearranging the furniture in my bedroom. My poor father had to patch and paint my bedroom walls annually to mask all the thumb tack holes, tape-tear marks and color bleeds from all the collages and, "art exhibitions." So perhaps my fate was sealed then and I was born to be an interior designer. Today, I still have the, "fire in the belly," feeling when I see an vacant room or a blue print, just as an artist sees a blank canvas.

One's living space should be a reflection of their own personality. This is why my portfolio is vast, showing many different styles. A perfectly completed project should look as though all aspects of the room blend effortlessly. Time honored antiques paired with modern classics and one -of-a-kind-finds from travels. Not my travels, not my family heirlooms but pieces near and dear to the hearts of my clients.
